Washington, DC Student Tours

DC many distinctive neighborhoods.
Here are a few you may want to visit. Adams-Morgan is a vibrant, trendy, multiethnic neighborhood full of boutiques, clubs, and restaurants. You will find a number of colorful murals here, as well as other points of interest, such as the District of Columbia Arts Center and an open-air market on Saturdays.

Anacostia was named for its original Native American inhabitants, and was the settlement area for freed blacks after the Civil War. It is home to the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site and the Anacostia Museum (of African American history and culture).

The Brookland residential area makes up the northeast part of the city. It features the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the Franciscan Monastery, and the Catholic University of America.

Capitol Hill offers many attractions, including the U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court building, Library of Congress, Folger Shakespeare Library, National Postal Museum, and Union Station. Tour the U.S. Botanic Garden or visit the Eastern Market for fresh baked goods, produce and fruit, and local arts and crafts.

The Downtown/Lafayette Square area is overflowing with things to see: the White House, National Archives, the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building, Ford's Theatre, the U.S. Mint Museum, and Chinatown. Stroll through Lafayette Park or visit the Renwick Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. Or tour the International Spy Museum and learn about the world of espionage!

Dupont Circle/Kalorama is where you'll find Washington's famous Embassy Row. The streets abound with bookstores, restaurants, art galleries, museums, nightspots, and movie theaters. It is also the hub of D.C.'s gay community.

Foggy Bottom was Washington's early industrial center. Now it is a low-key part of town, enlivened by the presence of the Kennedy Center, the State Department, George Washington University, and the Watergate complex. Here you'll find small and medium-size hotels, a mix of restaurants, and residential side streets.

Georgetown, home to Georgetown University, is a wealthy community dating from colonial times. Then it was a thriving tobacco port, but today it sports luxurious hotels, boutiques, chic restaurants, and popular bars. Quiet, tree-lined streets with restored houses, Dumbarton Oaks gardens, and the C&O (Chesapeake & Ohio) Canal surround this ever-popular neighborhood.

Glover Park is a primarily residential neighborhood that attracts many of the students of Georgetown and American Universities.No trip to Washington, DC would be complete without a trip to the Mall. This 300-foot-wide space stretches between Constitution and Independence Avenues, and extends two and one-half miles from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. It is home to most of the Smithsonian Institution museums as well as numerous other attractions.

Shaw/U Street proudly hosts the African-American Civil War Memorial, the Thurgood Marshall Center, and the Lincoln Theater. The famous Duke Ellington Mural is also part of this traditionally black cultural, professional, and educational center. Howard University lies just to the north.

Southwest/Waterfront - The area to the south of the National Mall is home to the Tony Award-winning Arena Stage, Benjamin Banneker Circle and Fountain, the Titanic Memorial, and L'Enfant Plaza. The waterfront area features piers, sailboats, yachts, fishing boats, seafood markets, and restaurants.

The Upper Northwest/Woodley Park neighborhood contains restaurants, antique stores, the National Zoo, and Rock Creek Park, where the public enjoys hiking, jogging, picnicking, horseback riding, and golfing.

NOTE: For Capitol and tour requests of other Federal buildings, please submit a tour request form. The White House has resumed tours, but due to a high volume of requests and certain restrictions, they require at least six weeks notice.

The Capitol Complex is the focal point of the US government's Legislative Branch, and includes the six principal Congressional office buildings and three Library of Congress buildings. One of the most widely recognized buildings in the world, it is the quintessential symbol of the American people and their government, the meeting place of the nation's legislature, an art and history museum, and a tourist attraction visited by millions every year.

As museums go, the Smithsonian Institution is the largest and certainly the best-known in the nation. It actually consists of 16 individual museums, plus 98 affiliates and seven research centers. Exhibits cover an enormous range of fields, including science, art, natural history, and technology. The Smithsonian provides your only opportunity to view the magnificent Hope Diamond, the Apollo 11 Command Module "Columbia," and the compass that Meriwether Lewis and William Clark used on their famous expedition in 1804. You will also find masterpieces by Whistler, Rodin, Degas, and Matisse, and the celebrated giant pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian on loan from the government of China.

Other museums include the Anacostia Museum & Center for African American History and Culture, Lillian and Albert Small Jewish Museum, Decatur House Museum, the Newseum, Textile Museum, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture, National Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, the Lincoln Museum, and the Octagon Museum, which was built in 1800 as an icon to the future of Washington, DC.

Art galleries include the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Freer Gallery of Art, and the Phillips Collection, and, of course, the National Gallery of Art. Other exhibits include the Franciscan Monastery, the Islamic Center, the Latin American Youth Center, National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center.
